About An Introduction to War:
As a Dustoff medic, John Seebeth flew aboard Army helicopter ambulances in Vietnam. The legendary Huey Dustoff choppers were unarmed and often flew into hot LZs without gunship escort. After flying missions for nine months--striving to save lives of wounded soldiers--John received a gunshot wound to his neck during a rescue mission.
Linda collaborated with John to write An Introduction to War. The novel is based on historic facts derived from personal interviews, diaries, correspondence, medical records and declassified Army documents, such as an Aircraft Accident Report and 196th Combat After Action Report.
Through John's healing journey, he takes a hard look at the Vietnam War and his beloved country that sent him off to fight it. His story examines war, dealing with a stigma, education, and new perspectives.
"It's the best our national character has to offer - Americans risking their own lives to save others.

Linda Seebeth’s An Introduction to War: The Journey of a Medic’s Heart is a mind-blowing journey into the depths of the human spirit. On 20th July 1969, two men reached out to grab the world’s attention from a tiny Apollo 11 capsule. For the young men fighting in Vietnam, they could not answer this call, as to do so could result in death. Specialist John Seebeth was a Medic serving onboard a Huey helicopter, flying life or death missions to ferry the sick and wounded to treatment centers. John’s world was one of nightmares and terror, light years from where the rest of the world lived, and almost exactly one month after Neil Armstrong uttered those famous words, John’s future was rewritten. This is his story and it is quite a ride right through to the last word.
An Introduction to War: The Journey of a Medic’s Heart by Linda Seebeth is a gut-wrenching read that will stir emotions across a wide spectrum. I found parts of this story to be not only graphic but incredibly shocking as well. My heart broke reading about some of John’s experiences, and I am still contemplating whether I could have endured what he did at that age. The ultimate message I took from this book was that no matter how evil the deeds of mankind become, true goodness can still be found in people, and the power of that is irresistible. This book is not for the faint-hearted; it is for those who are prepared to confront the best and worst of what being human represents.

An Introduction To War: The Journey of a Medic's Heart is a work of fiction based on real-life events during the Vietnam War, and it was penned by author Linda Seebeth. Seebeth consulted primarily with John Seebeth, who worked as a Dustoff medic during wartime, risking his life over and over again in the attempt to save lives aboard army helicopter ambulances. Derived from memories and documentation of a very personal time in John’s life, the narrative follows the many brave exploits of the central protagonist but also asks questions about the nature of the war itself, the stigma placed upon it, and examines new perspectives during and after the event.
Historical fiction with this level of emotion, accuracy, and heart strays so close to fact that it becomes both harrowing and educational to read as well as engaging from a storytelling perspective. Author Linda Seebeth takes John’s experiences and relays them with immense respect for both John and the subject matter itself, but also layers the tale with her own narrative talents and atmosphere. These touches develop an emotional connection with the reader, bringing the settings and tension of each situation into a more visceral and realistic light. Because of this, we not only receive an amazing and heroic tale of what Dustoff medics went through during the time but a sophisticated narrative that causes us, as readers, to think and feel outside our comfort zones. Overall, An Introduction To War: The Journey of a Medic's Heart is an absolute must-read for readers across the board.

An Introduction to War: The Journey of a Medic's Heart by Linda Seebeth is the story of a Dustoff medic as he recalls his experience of the Vietnam War. John Seebeth was used to flying in a helicopter ambulance and giving medical aid to soldiers as they fought in the Vietnam War. As a Dustoff medic, John is used to flying into the thick of war zones and risking his life to save others. He was happy with his job and thrived on it. However, that all changed when he was shot in the neck and almost died. The life of a medic is hard, he knew that, but everything changed when he actually got hurt. Loving your country is one thing, but war can change people and their perspective. Did he continue to serve his country? Will John’s recovery be soon enough for him to live to tell the tale?
An Introduction to War: The Journey of a Medic's Heart by Linda Seebeth was a hard novel to read. The author didn’t hold back on anything and let the reader in to experience everything first hand. John’s character is fantastic and to think he really went through all of this in his life is very shocking. This is a side of the Vietnam War I never read about; I wasn’t aware of Dustoff medics and John gives a very clear view of what his life used to be. War is never pretty and the author makes it as gritty and raw as she can. The action never ends, the story flows tremendously well and John feels like a friend from the very beginning. I am amazed at how real the descriptions are and how invested I became just after reading the first chapter. This is truly an amazing gem, it is educational and it is entertaining! Kudos to the author!
